Split Tunneling refers to the process of permitting a remote VPN user to access a public network, most ordinarily the Internet, and at the same time the user is also allowed to access the resources on the VPN Network. This technique of network access allows the user to contact the remote devices, such as a network printer, as possible at the time of accessing through the public network.
Some of the advantages related to Split tunneling are as follows:
- It only transfers data that essentially requires the security of a VPN, thereby leading to smaller workloads for VPN clients, server, gateways etc
- It allows to perform a strict partition between the corporate Internet traffic and private Internet usage
- It protects bandwidth within the VPN connection since it does not have to conduct private data
