Understanding Multiple Aspects of Data Centers In View of Big Data

The impact of big data can be understood from the fact that ninety percent of all data is produced in the span of last two years. It is predicted that velocity of data generation will continue to accelerate further in near future. In view of this data centers need to gear up to handle the massive data explosion.

Data centers play vital role in handling all types of data storage and data handling workloads. The looming challenge of big data must be effectively handled by data centers that need to improve data center management tactics. We need to appreciate and analyze impact of big data on various aspects of data center capabilities.

Capability of data center’s electrical infrastructure

Every data center heavily relies on the capability of its electrical infrastructure for managing incremental volumes of data. It is vital to understand potential of the existing electrical infrastructure in order to assess the capacity of data center to face future challenges of big data.

In almost all cases, electrical infrastructures of data centers are not geared up to deal with challenges of big data. This underlines an urgent need to upgrade existing infrastructure or to deploy new and high performance electrical infrastructure facilities.

In view of this several organizations have initiated procedures for estimating sustainability of their current capacities and preparing expansion plans for accommodating future needs of electrical infrastructures. Future data center facilities need to have enhanced data management capacities as well as reliability while handling such excessive workloads.

Although, big data may not have a direct impact on the power consumption aspect of data center, the amount of power consumed by data centers that are involved in handling big volumes of data is significantly more in comparison with ordinary data centers. Expansion of electrical infrastructure results in multifold increase in power demand. Naturally, the costs of data center operations also multiply due to greater power consumption. This explains importance of cost planning while preparing to handle larger data workloads due to emergence of big data.

Data center managers are also required to consider data center location while estimating costs. As per the existing trends, data centers are either built or shifted to locations that are away from major cities. Amount of power consumed for data center cooling contributes to almost 40 percent of the total power required to run data center. This also explains why majority of data centers are coming up in the northern hemisphere which is relatively cooler.

Impact on storage infrastructure

Storage infrastructure is another component of data center that is expected to be influenced by big data. The existing data centers are designed to handle relational data and the challenges of big data are going to add structured data, unstructured data, and semi-structured data to underline need for enhancement of storage infrastructure of data centers.

These new data center infrastructures will need to accommodate new features of big data including variety, veracity, velocity, and volumes. This is certainly involver more complex cloud storage needs and the existing data center must pay attention to these features while developing new storage infrastructure.

New traffic patterns

In addition to the huge data volumes and variety of other features of big data, data centers should also be able to handle multiple sources of data. There are also different formats, and volumes of data are to be considered. In order to address demands of traffic patterns of big data center engineers are contemplating about revolutionary designs and their deployment methods. In order to acquire compatibility with new traffic patterns and types of data one must pay attention to the storage architecture of data centers.

Data center security

Big data explosion is driving a big change in multiple aspects of data centers including data center security. Since big data refers to huge volumes of data from variety of sources, security of data storage gains prominence. Obviously, security of big data is another overwhelming aspect of its impact on the operations of data centers.

Most of the data has extreme importance in terms of analytics and organizational information. Data centers are supposed to implement high end security measures to protect data at various levels including network level, application levels, and storage level. Appropriate and comprehensive security planning is essential for mitigation of threats from all quarters.

Impact on data center network infrastructure

We need to accept that the existing data center inks are based on Wide Area Network with moderate requirements of bandwidth. This arrangement of network suffices the purpose of applications that were originally designed to interact with data centers only with help of requests generated by humans.

The inbound bandwidth requirements will exponentially multiply with the huge data volumes coming in from big data sources. Obviously, bandwidth requirements of network will significantly increase and data center infrastructures will have to be upgraded or modified for supporting greater volumes and velocities of big data.

Big data is going to influence almost all aspects of data center infrastructure across the globe. The most significant challenges will be to accommodate rise in power and cooling requirements. This explains the need to design future data centers by considering challenges of big data.
