Heterogeneous Cloud Vs. Homogeneous – An insight

A homogeneous cloud hosting comprises of a complete software stack. These include a hypervisor (or a remote cloud hosting provider), intermediate management layers as well as an end-user portal which is provided by a single vendor.

On the other hand, heterogeneous clouds incorporate components from different vendors across various levels. Many a times, management tools from a single vendor drive the hypervisor from another one. Or else, at the same level, multiple hypervisors are driven by one management tool).

The main row about a homogeneous environment is that, in this format, everything comes in a pre-integrated manner. After the setup, if something goes wrong, just one party is held responsible. When one vendor is in the possession of so much power, users become dependent on the same vendor’s technical and commercial strategy.

The advantage of a cloud monoculture is that users are able to specialize in a vendor’s tool. While admins easily cover for each other within this strategy, the downsides are different. Yet many features are available on the technical side which is exclusively developed by the vendor. Besides, when a user is “locked in” to one vendor strategy, resources are easily delegated despite changes in the pricing structure. This belongs to the commercial side.

For the records, heterogeneous cloud architectures try to detour a lock-in effect for it introduces components from various vendors. These resources are allocated on the basis of a common set of approaches. Yet, at a given point of time, a single management component is introduced. As a result companies providing homogeneous approaches can defend certain charges of lock-in; they can say that the convergence moves a lock-in higher up within any given stack.

Thus the false equivalence in-between platform lock-ins and theoretical management lock-in is nothing but a rhetorical trick. Some management vendors should keep up with the development pace of managed Dedicated server platforms as well as risk falling behind the competition from several other heterogeneous cloud technology management dealers.
