A virtual private server (VPS) or a virtual dedicated server (VDS) refers to a virtual server that is installed on a computer which serves numerous websites. However, for the user it appears to be a dedicated server. It operates and has the privacy like a separate physical computer. A single computer can comprise of multiple VPS’s, each one of which possesses its own operating system (OS) that runs the hosting software for a specific user.

VPS offers a unique platform, wherein one physical server is split to accommodate multiple virtual servers. The VPS is usually opted by small businesses that require a customized website but cannot afford a dedicated server. An additional useful feature of VPS technology is the capability of a single subscriber to maintain multiple virtual servers. For example, a website proprietor might use one server for the production-level website and the other one as a dummy site. Each of the VPS can be rebooted individually and is comparatively much stronger than the unsafe shared web hosting server.
