Desktop environment - it is used for user interaction. There are plenty of desktop environments like GNOME, Cinnamon, Mate, Pantheon, Enlightenment, KDE, Xfce, etc. 

Applications - Most of the Linux distributions come with tools that can be used for application installation. Ubuntu Linux comes with Ubuntu software center.
