VPS - Literally means Virtual Private Servers. Though all the websites are hosted, on the same machine, it virtually allows each website to be fully independent. With Shared hosting, even if one website goes down, the entire server would be down, which is not the case with VPS.

VPS hosting reduces the gap between shared hosting and dedicated hosting services. With VPS you get the independence and flexibility of dedicated Server hosting service at the cost of shared hosting service.
