By using PuTTY SSH client, you can generate an SSH key on
Windows dedicated server. You can download PuTTY from its official website. Now, follow these steps to generate a key with
PuTTY.
- Download and run puttygen.exe generator
- In the “parameters” section, select SSH2 DSA and click on Generate
- After that, move the mouse pointer randomly in the small screen to generate the key pairs
- Enter a key comment, which is used to identify the key (it is extremely useful when you use multiple SSH keys)
- Type in the password to confirm. The password is used to protect your key. It is required during the process of connection via SSH.
- To save your private key, click “Save Private Key”
- To save your public key, click “Save Public Key”
The IP address from which you have purchased a
Dedicated Server was automatically added in the server firewall. To establish WHM and SSH connections from another IP address, you should request it to be added in the server firewall by contacting the tech support team of your service provider. Access from your
IP address is allowed for the SSH port on the server. You can request this by raising a ticket under the Port Opening Request category.
When you have generated your public and private SSH keys, you can add the public key through your WHM. To accomplish this, login to the servers WHM panel as root user and go to Manage SSH Keys, which you can find in the
security section. Select the Import Key button and type in the name, password for the key and paste your public key in the respective field. Click Import to import your key. Now, you will be able to connect to your Dedicated Server through SSH.
Load the private key, which you have already generated. You can do so by executing pageant.exe program file. This file can be downloaded from this URL. After downloading, run the program and load your private key in it. Now, start putty.exe and enter the connection details in the session category as follows:
Host Name (or IP address) - In this, enter the hostname/ IP of the Dedicated Server
Port- Port address for the connection
Protocol- Select the SSH
By entering these details, click on Open to establish the connection. Enter the username as root and you will be logged in using the SSH key pair.
