Is Amazon Web Services Profitable?

Amazon web services posted a 49% growth in the first quarter of 2018 which shows a remarkable increase over the entire 2017. This showed quieten all the rumors of the losses that the company has supposedly been sustaining over the last few periods.

The revenue it earned is USD $ 5.4 billion in comparison to the USD $3.66 billion it had in the 1st quarter last year (2017). The profit growth was hovering around 45% in 2017, a great effort, considering the competition, varying customer demands. The company continues to bask on the 7-year advantage it has over the competitors because of its early launch.

The operating profits also took an upward trend increasing from the $890 million last year same time to $1.4 billion which shows a jump of 57% in the first quarter of 2018. There is a huge jump in the Amazon share price. On a 12-month trailing basis, the revenue earned by AWS was around USD$ 19.2 billion and it is likely to touch or cross the USD$ 20 billion per year mark.

Amazon Web Services undoubtedly is the most profitable division among all the divisions that Amazon has. It has come a long way since its inception a decade ago and has won the trust of its customers.

The success story of Amazon has made its CEO Jeff Bezos the richest man today worth more than $100 billion.
