Many of the newcomers prefer Linux servers to start with as it gives them more flexibility than the Windows hosting. Some of the reasons for its popularity include it being open source, is more stable and less expensive than Windows. It is available in several flavours such as RedHat, Ubuntu, CentOS, Debian and more.

Linux being open-source is freely available for users. The total cost of ownership, in even in the enterprise version purchased with support, is cheaper in comparison to Windows or any other software. Windows, on the other hand, is a Microsoft owned proprietary software and all the products carry a license fee. Even the add-ons including security applications carry a fee.

All the Windows versions come with GUI (graphical user interface). Working on Windows application is cumbersome without its GUI. Although this integration has made Windows administration easy for the users, it increases the overheads on the computer. Linux is not all that complicated though some of its distributions provide GUI tools. Because of the dependence on GUI, Windows requires stronger hardware than the Linux shared servers. Windows hardware requires frequent upgrades to put up with the increasing resource demands needing reboots that could add to the wear and tear. Comparatively, Linux is more robust and easily scalable.
