Linux and Windows are two operating systems that are generally used by the web hosting providers to host websites. Both are strong and reliable with capabilities of managing high load pressures. There are a few differences between the two.

Windows is a Microsoft product and is commercially sold with a license fee. Linux, on the other hand, is a UNIX- based open-source application distributed freely. Linux is more affordable than Windows.

All the Windows applications are built on ASP, ASP.NET, MSSQL and MSAccess technologies while the Linux uses scripting languages such as MySQL, PHP, Perl, Python etc.

Windows is compatible with all major servers and the users can choose any server they are comfortable in. Linux does not support Microsoft technologies so customers whose websites are built on the Microsoft technologies should use Windows operating system only.

Both are stable platforms although Windows hosting requires rebooting as and when there is an upgrade or new application is installed. Linux seldom requires rebooting.

Linux shared hosting generally comes with cPanel control panel while Windows plans come with Plesk control panel.

Linux servers allow alterations to code as users have root access. Windows do not allow code alterations.

Linux shared hosting being open source has a huge community of developers that offer support through tutorials and forums. Microsoft too offers support and frequent updates and security patches to all their products.
