There are several implications of server virtualization for disaster recovery (DR). One of the primary benefits is speedier recovery in case data is lost. Traditional systems would take at least a day or two to completely restore lost data. Server virtualization completes it in a few hours as building of servers, OS or applications is not required. DR testing has to be done periodically to check the systems are in order. Virtualization is done with both hardware and software individually or in combination. Server virtualization removes the application compatibility issues by server consolidation and merging of several virtual servers on to lesser physical servers by reducing waste with better utilization of resources and setting up virtual machines as per the exact resource requirements. Server virtualization allows smooth fail over and fail back. It has the ability to automatically move on to the redundant standby servers or network at times of fail over. Similarly, virtualization ensures fail back which means you are able to recover the fail over systems back to their original conditions in quick time. Server virtualization has given more reliability to the process of disaster recovery by offering protection against power outages, system fail overs, natural disasters and calamities and human errors.
