According to Uptime Institute’s tiered system of data centers, a Tier 1 data center has only one set of components, network unlinking facility, and a single set of components. Tier 1 data center belongs to a basic and the simplest data center categories with no facility for a stand-by facility of providing power, services, and components required to run the infrastructure of a data center facility.

Data center that belongs to this category can guarantee an uptime of not more than 99.671 per cent, Tier 1 data centers can suffer from average annual downtime of 28.8 hours.

Tier 1 data center is not suitable for management of business critical data. It lacks redundancy of the most vital resources and therefore is not a preferred choice to look after storage, processing, and dissemination of data by organizations or individuals.

In order to maintain consistency and integrity of data processing, a data center infrastructure must be prepared for failure of components, network linking, and power supply. If the facility of data center is not able to provide assurance of a stand by resource, then the enterprises will suffer from serious downtime issues and fear of losing vital data for maintaining continuity of business processes.

Categorization of data centers by adopting a well defined methodology basically involves around the extent of availability of resources and this method has been established by Uptime Institute.

The tiered method for determining the resource availability of data centers provides classification of four tiers. Accordingly, a Tier 1 data center forms the basis of this classification.

The hierarchy of data centers based on this method facilitates users to know the ability of a data center to handle failure of vital resources including network up-linking, components, and power supply, just to name a few. In this hierarchy a Tier 4 data center is considered to be the most reliable infrastructure for data management.
