There are a few factors that affect the performance of the VPN and can slow down the internet speed.

Route:

A user who connects to the internet via the ISP and is without a VPN has a smaller route. In case the user is connected to the ISP who is connected to the internet via the VPN. Due to the difference in distance, using a VPN is slower in responding to a visitor.

Encryption:

Encryption of the Virtual Private Network traffic by the sender and decryption at the receiver end enhances the confidentiality and security but has its effect on the speed. The entire encryption process requires more processing power and hence can impact the speed.

Overload:

When the number of users on a server is more than the normal use, the traffic requests increase. The server takes a longer time to respond and can create performance issues. The overload issues come with the free VPN service providers who do not show much concern about quality or performance.

Quality:

If the hardware used to build the servers are not of the best standards, it will not be able to manage the pressure and will underperform. This makes it very important for the users not to opt for the free VPN services and pick a provider who is reliable and has a good reputation in the industry.

Location:

The distance between the user and the VPN server will also show an impact on the speed. The closer the distance faster will be the connection. It is again necessary to choose providers that have their server in the same region as you are located.

Software:

The security applications that you install may conflict with the VPN software. Anti-virus scan requires an internet connection and scanning can consume considerable resources. This might slow down the VPN server speed.
VPN servers are not speed-boosters. Their primary function is to ensure privacy, data safety, anonymity etc.
