Linux is a robust yet easily customizable in comparison to Windows. The two basic criteria that you must consider when choosing among Windows and Linux is the language used to write your website and that the database you use. If your website is written in PHP, MySQL, Python, Perl or CGI you must choose Linux. In case your site is using ASP.NET, MSSQL you should use Windows. To use Linux server, you need a SSH client (putty). You must point it towards the IP address of the server and log in to your account.

Choose your Linux distribution (Ubuntu, Red Hat, Linux Mint, CentOS, Zorin etc). After downloading one of the Linux distros, you need to install it properly. Then you should set it up. Install all the required software applications such as media player, office, internet browser etc. To set up Linux shared server, you need to install the three main requisites of Apache2, php and php SQLite component and MySQL. Once this setup is installed your Linux server is ready for hosting.
