Starter Linux hosting with cPanel is the plan that you subscribe to when you are just starting a business. Several years back when my business was in the starting phase, I chose a similar plan and as we grew I directed more and more visitors to my website. I think you should go with it too. Starter Linux hosting is best for those who have a business idea in mind but aren’t sure if it is going to work.

I was planning to start a business too. I am not sure if it is going to work at all. I got in touch with the host and they said I would need a VPS, although I am not sure if it is going to help. First, I am not in the state to invest in a VPS. Second, I am not proficient to handle a private servers and neither in the state to hire an expert to do so.

Kiaan, are you planning to host an application? If your website is heavy, a started Linux hosting with cPanel might not be able to handle it. This is perhaps the reason your host told you to choose a private server instead of shared hosting. Next case, if it is just a blog, you can run it pretty much without worries on a shared server. If this is the case, you need to explain your host that you aren’t in the state to invest in a VPS.

Third, if your web app is such robust that it cannot be handled by a shared host and you cannot run a VPS, choose managed VPS instead. This will likely solve all your issues.

I need a shared Linux hosting with cPanel but I want an unmanaged one. All the hosts I spoke to said that there are no unmanaged shared servers as such. If there was one, I’d be glad to have it.

@Aaryahi, they are right. Shared servers cannot be unmanaged. Know that there are more than a hundred clients on the same server. If they grant you the admin rights, you are likely to tinker with their files and this may impact those that are hosted on the same server. I have been working in the hosting industry for more than a decade and trust me, there isn’t a thing called unmanaged shared server. Most providers have also dumped unmanaged VPS, they solely offer managed private server because it is easier for them to manage.

No, shared servers are never unmanaged. The thing is that there are as many as 100 customers on the same server. The host cannot manage the server if it allows you the control of the machine. If you need more control you should try buying a VPS or a dedicated server, but again, it all bows down to what suits you the best.
