Data centers are categorized into four tiers, depending on their level of services and infrastructure. Here I will describe how their attributes vary from each other. Tier – I: This is the basic data center type having no redundant capacity component. As it comes with single source of power and cooling, any failure in the component may lead to the failure of entire system. Attributes • 99.671% Network uptime • 28.8 hours downtime annually • No redundancy • Useful for small organizations Tier- II: It comes with partial redundant capacity component. The benefit of this category of data center is that data processing is not affected even if any redundant component fails or removed. Attributes • 99.749% Network uptime • 20 hours downtime annually • Partial redundancy • Useful for small & mid-sized organizations Tier-III: This is the most popular data center facility type having all the features of Tier-I & Tier-II, along with multiple redundant capacity component, which means one each for active and passive backup supply. All the IT equipment in this category of data center come with dual power, and with ability to endure outage or any failure. It also doesn’t require annual maintenance that leads to shutdowns of businesses. Attributes • 99.982% Network uptime • 1.6 hours downtime annually • Multiple powers and cooling • Useful for large and mid-sized organizations Tier-IV: This is the most advanced data center facility that attains all the features of Tier – I, Tier –II & Tier – III data center, plus all the capacity equipment come with multiple and independent power sources, i.e. two delivery paths for each equipment. Attributes • 99.995% Network uptime • 26.28 minutes downtime annually • 2N+1 Redundancy • Can sustain 96 hrs. power outage |
