Linux, is a popular Open-source kernel which comes loaded with free software. These can be used by end-users.

As you already know, Linux does support PHP projects. As a coder, you can kick start your development project in Ruby on Rails. It saves you from wasting time on database driver issues and other petty annoyances.

Install Eclipse and NetBeans to do job of an IDE. Of you have some experience in Microsoft, you will realise that these IDEs work like the Web Platform Installer and the all new Webmatrix IDE.

XAMP server is available on Linux which is like the WAMP server on Windows. It can be teamed with Apache2.
